Every summer many villages in Derbyshire carry on a tradition of Well Dressing. Large pictures are made from a bed of clay into which flower petals are carefully pressed. The finished picture is placed next to the wells as a blessing. The example above comes from the village of Rowthorne and it depicts Bess of Hardwick , the builder of Hardwick Hall. The money for which she raised by marrying rich husbands.
