The Galapagos islands are in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Ecuador . These islands were formed by volcanic activity and upheavals in the Earth's crust. The British naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882) studied the wild life on the islands and noticed differences between animals of the same kind on different islands. This eventually led Darwin to formulate his theory of evolution. The animals have no fear of man and they can be approached and even touched if it were to be allowed. The islands are unique and it is to be hoped that tourism does not harm this wonderful 'Garden of Eden'.
