The Grand Canyon has been carved from layers of sandstone, limestone and shale by the relentless flow of the Colorado River over 5 million years or so. The canyon is a mile deep and 277 miles long . It averages 10 miles in width. The canyon is being carved still deeper by the river but the building of the Glen Canyon Dam has slowed natures forces. During rain storms the river stirs up the silt and it turns the water to its historic red brown colour.
